Review: American Civil War: 1865

In early 1865, following the fall of Columbia and Charleston in South Carolina to the Union forces, Jefferson Davis relinquished command of the army to General Lee. Despite this step, the advance of Union armies through North Carolina continued, resulting in the capture of key cities like Fayetteville, Bentonville, Goldsboro, and Raleigh by mid-April.

Lee's troops, worn out by the Union's siege of Petersburg and Richmond, launched a final bid for resistance. They managed to seize Fort Stedman on March 25, but a swift counterattack overturned their temporary success. Consequently, on the night of April 2nd, the Confederate army evacuated Richmond. Subsequently, the Union forces pursued them along the Appomattox River, leaving no room for escape. The climax came when Grant accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, signaling the end of the American Civil War. Sherman later accepted Johnston's surrender at Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26th, effectively bringing an end to slavery in the United States.
